An American student has described how he was tortured for a month by his father in an effort to turn him heterosexual.

Samuel Brinton, a student at Kansas State University, said his Southern Baptist missionary father beat him, burned him and shocked him with electric currents.

He said his family, who lived on a missionary base in Iowa, first realised he was gay at the age of 12, when he told his father that he felt more strongly about his male best friend than models in Playboy magazine.

His father responded by knocking him out so brutally, he needed hospital treatment.

Samuel was interviewed as part of a project by a group called I’m From Driftwood, which travelled across the US to find untold LGBT stories.

He described how his father told him he was the only gay person left in the country and the government would soon find him and kill him.

He said he was beaten badly by his father to the point of being hospitalised six times, although doctors were told that he had fallen down the stairs.

Samuel was also burned or forced to hold ice cubes while looking at pictures of men embracing to make him associate male intimacy with pain.

The worst came in the form of the “month of hell”, in which needles were stuck in his fingers to administer electric shocks while he was shown gay porn.

Samuel says he considered suicide, even climbing on to the roof of a three-storey building. His mother, he says, told him she would love him again if he became straight.

The student said he then decided to pretend to be straight, which his parents accepted.

But when he came to leave home for university, he told them the truth and was warned by his father that he would be killed if he ever returned.

He said: “I’ve tried to call them multiple times. ‘I try to keep calling. I want contact.

“The last time [my dad told me] he would shoot me if I ever tried to walk in the door again.”

But he added he would still give his parents “the chance” to accept him in future.

Tory MP says gay marriage is ‘a step too far’

Conservative MPs have spoken out against prime minister David Cameron’s support for gay marriage.

On Wednesday, Mr Cameron urged the party to back the move because of its Conservatism, not in spite of it.

Gerald Howarth, a junior defence minister, told The Daily Telegraph that gay unions could not be considered marriage.

He said: “Some of my best friends are in civil partnerships, which is fine, but I think it would be a step too far to suggest that this is marriage. I take the view that marriage can only be between a man and a woman. That is what Christian marriage is about.”

The Tory MP for Wellingborough, Peter Bone, said the prime minister’s remarks were “political correctness”.

Catholic Church leaders have also challenged Mr Cameron’s support for the issue.

The Most Rev Peter Smith, the Archbishop of Southwark, welcomed the support for marriage but accused the prime minister of trying to “redefine” the institution.

The Catholic Bishop of Arundel and Brighton, the Rt Rev Kieran Conry, said the church would “have to do something” to protect marriage.

A government consultation on “how” to legalise gay marriage will begin in spring 2012.

Cameron appoints gay man as chief speechwriter

Mr Glover, who is the civil partner of Times writer Matthew Parris, will replace Ameet Gill, who has become Number 10′s new head of strategic comms.

According to Paul Waugh of PoliticsHome.com, Mr Glover is a “modernising Tory” who has impressed Downing Street over the last year with his enthusiasm for the coalition.

Ugandan campaigner says gay bar was shut down

A Ugandan LGBT campaigner says that her gay bar was forcibly shut down.

Jacqueline Kasha said that her bar Sapphos Island, in Kampala, was padlocked shut on Sunday by the landlord.

According to Associated Press, the landlord complained of noise and “strange” patrons.

Ms Kasha is the founder and executive director of Freedom and Roam Uganda.

Earlier this year, her colleague David Kato was murdered after the Ugandan tabloid Rolling Stone published a list of names, photos and addresses of gay people, calling for them to be hanged.

Ms Kasha, who has been honoured for her campaigning work, was also on the list.

She has vowed to open another LGBT venue.

Anthony de la Torre of Bowling Green, who said his first acting job was a voice role on "Dora the Explorer," said he signed on with two agencies seeking Bieber impersonators after he was frequently mistaken for the teenage singer while on a Caribbean cruise with his family during the past summer, The (Toledo) Blade reported Monday.
"Honestly, this isn't my dream job, but it's still fun because I do have a blast at the parties I go to pretending to be him," de la Torre said. "It's just a lot of fun making little kids freak out."
De la Torre said his job takes him all over the country, including Boston, New York and Kentucky.
The teenager's mother, Esther Garcia-Tio, said she supports her son's acting dreams.
"For anyone we love in our life, I think our job is to try to help make their dreams come true, and I think that's why I did this, because I want his dreams to come true and I would do it for any one of my kids," she said.

Serbia Pride may be banned over violence fears

Serbian authorities are considering banning Sunday’s Pride march.

Yesterday, the country’s police chief warned that marchers in Belgrade may face violence from far-right extremists.

Interior minister Ivica Dacic said that the event is a major security risk for the public, police and property as a far-right group plans to hold a march at the same time.

He told Reuters: “If I were the organisers I would recognise our security assessment and I would postpone the parade.

“If they do not make such a decision, the police will be forced to do so, as no one else will.”
Belgrade’s mayor has also called for the event to be banned,

Last year, 100 people – mostly police officers – were injured when 20,000 people held a counter-protest against the gay marchers.

Serbia’s police chief, Ivica Dacic, has urged organisers to cancel the event, although he said police would protect them if the march goes ahead.

Organiser Goran Miletic told Reuters that authorities should not give in to threats of violence.

“Violence is not normal. What is normal in a democratic country is to have people rallying peacefully for a couple of hours,” he said.

Comment: Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell about HIV status

Michael Lucas, the gay porn producer, offers a new solution to cutting HIV rates and stigma around the condition.

Here’s a sentence I never thought I would write: I’m in favour of a ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy. Not in the military, of course — those days are behind us — but in the bedroom. What I’m talking about, specifically, is HIV. And my point is that, at least when it comes to sex, we should talk about it less.

It amazes me that in 2011, so many people still won’t sleep with HIV-positive guys. But it’s true. Many HIV-negative friends have told me they won’t have sex with anyone they know to be positive. And I’ve heard from the other side too: from positive friends with horror stories about the difficulties they face in dating or even hooking up. For them, the quest for love and sex can be an obstacle course of thoughtless discrimination and rejection.

Don’t get me wrong. I understand that negative guys might get turned off when they hear that a hookup is HIV-positive. For most people, disease isn’t sexy. But there’s an easy solution to that problem: Just don’t talk about it. It might also ruin the mood if Mr Right Now revealed that he had liver cancer, diabetes, sickle-cell anemia, or a family history of mental illness. But why would he tell you those things on a first date? And why would you ask?

The answer, some might say, has to do with managing the risk of contagion. But many people still seem to have outdated ideas about HIV transmission. One friend says that guys often get mad at him if they’ve kissed before he tells them he’s positive — lashing out as if he has put their lives in danger. Is this 1983? Do they also think they can get AIDS from toilet seats?

You can’t get HIV from kissing. In fact, it’s hard to get HIV even from sex — as long as you use a condom. I dated a positive guy for two years in the 1990s; we had safe sex almost every day, and I never seroconverted. Today, it is even more difficult to become infected through protected sex. Recent studies suggest that HIV-positive men who are taking their medications pose a vastly reduced risk of transmitting the virus.

But shunning HIV-positive people is not just phobic and unkind — it is also dangerous. Paradoxically, a supposed open discussion about HIV actually leads to a culture of HIV secrecy; it punishes men who are honest about their status, rewards those who lie, and discourages guys from getting tested (and treated).

What’s more, it perpetuates a growing trend toward barebacking by men who think that they can stay negative as long as they only hook up with other negative guys. I don’t know anyone who has seroconverted from safe sex with an HIV-positive partner — but I know several who have gotten HIV from boyfriends who were barebacking on the side.

The problem is, an honest guy may tell you he’s positive, but you can never reliably know who’s negative. A guy you meet on Manhunt may tell you he got tested last month — but are you really going to take the word of a guy whom you met under a pseudonym and whose profile probably shaves four years off his age and adds two inches to his dick? Even if he thinks he’s telling the truth, he may have been infected since.

It boils down to this: The real way to avoid HIV is not by avoiding people with HIV; it’s by avoiding practices that make HIV communicable. If you want to stay negative, assume that everyone you hook up with is positive, and wear a condom to protect yourself.

If the relationship moves beyond sex, there will be a time when it’s appropriate to talk about your medical histories. That may mean continuing to practice safe sex — but if you love a guy, a thin layer of rubber shouldn’t be enough to keep you apart.

Until then, it’s none of your business. Leave HIV status off your hookup checklists and Manhunt profiles and pre-sex chatter. In this case, ignorance really can be bliss: There are a huge number of super-hot, HIV-positive guys out there that HIV-negative men are losing out on.

It’s time to rid the gay community of the irrational fears and discrimination that have held us back for far too long. Positive men don’t deserve to be second-class sexual citizens. When it comes to HIV, the baseline rules should be simple: Don’t ask. Don’t tell. Stay smart. And enjoy the hell out of each other.

Man, 18, convicted of murdering gay pensioner

An 18-year-old man has been convicted of murdering a gay pensioner.

Aiden Jackson, of Sleaford, Lincolnshire, faces a life sentence for the killing of 67-year-old David Cowley.

A trial at Lincoln crown court heard he promised the older man sex but strangled him and left his body lying face-down in water.

Mr Cowley’s body was found on November 17th 2010 at a remote spot at Ballast Pits off Mareham Lane.

He had been beaten and suffocated.

Jackson told Lincoln crown court that Mr Cowley had offered him money for sex the previous evening, which “shocked” him.

But he admitted going to meet the older man the next day to be driven to the remote spot.

Jackson claimed he lashed out when the older man made sexual advances to him and alleged another teenager had helped him kill the pensioner but the prosecution said Jackson had acted alone.

The teenager, who pleaded not guilty to murder, will be sentenced next month.

Following yesterday’s hearing, Det Supt Stuart Morrison said: “This was a difficult case not made any easier by the various different versions of events that we were given over time. Each different version had to be thoroughly investigated.

“I can say that I was satisfied all along that the fatal assault on David Cowley was carried out by Aiden Jackson and no-one else.

“We have spoken to Mr Cowley’s family and they are pleased with the verdict. I think they see it as an opportunity to try to move on with their lives.

“Aiden Jackson is a young man, his actions have not only led to the death of Mr Cowley and affected his family and friends but they have also ruined his life and devastated his family too. I see no reason to celebrate anything today.”

Gay rights groups accuse NI health minister of ignoring them

Campaigners against the gay blood donation ban have accused Northern Ireland health minister Edwin Poots of snubbing them.

Mr Poots announced last week that he would not lift the lifetime ban on gay men donating blood, despite the rest of the UK doing so on November 7th.

The minister, who has been accused of homophobia, said relaxing the rules could lead to HIV transmission.

Gay rights group The Rainbow Project said it had written to Mr Poots on September 8th and has received no reply.

Director John O’Docherty told the Belfast Telegraph: “We are very disappointed the minister has not yet responded to us, even with an acknowledgement letter.
“We are keen to meet with him to discuss the decision.

“Mr Poots will still accept blood from other parts of the UK but will not allow gay men in Northern Ireland to donate blood.

“There are serious questions about the legality of this decision. We are currently considering a number of steps but hope he changes his position.”

Writing last week, Mr Poots said: “The Advisory Committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues and Organs (SaBTO) has confirmed that the risk of HIV infection would, although by a small margin, increase as a result of a relaxation in the present lifetime deferral.”

Earlier this month, UK health ministers announced that the rules would be relaxed in England, Wales and Scotland on November 7th – allowing gay and bisexual men to donate if they refrain from sex for 12 months.

The decision followed a review by the government’s Advisory Committee on the Safety of Blood, Tissues and Organs (SaBTO).

Some campaigners have argued that any ban based on sexual orientation is discriminatory and may break European law.

THIS enormous 18ft anaconda was successfully captured by a team of daring biologists - during a tropical rainforest exploration.

Niall McCann, a 29-year-old biologist from Cardiff, pounced on the slithering jungle giant when he happened across it on a bank of the Rewa River in Guyana.

The monster reptile weighed around 100kg and had a 27in girth.

Niall is an avid adventurer and has rowed the Atlantic and trekked across Greenland's Polar Ice Cap.

He has a passion for handling creatures that would petrify most people and had always dreamed of catching one of these massive snakes.
He said: "I'd always dreamed of seeing an anaconda and I knew that our work in Gcondauyana would give us a real possibility of seeing one.

Miss Angola Leila Lopes has won Miss Universe 2011, beating 88 other Miss Universe contestants in a lavish show at Sao Paolo’s Credicard Hall.

The 25-year-old Lopes, a business student by day, edged Miss Ukraine Olesia Stefanko into second place, and was praised by judges for her beauty and intelligence.

She spoke in Portuguese to charm the Brazilian audience (both Brazil and Angola are former Portuguese colonies), and revealed her status as Miss Angola had allowed her to assist various social causes in her country:

Protesters outside the US embassy in London set fire to a US flag during a minute's silence held to mark the moment when the first hijacked airliner hit the World Trade Centre in New York 10 years ago.

A number of radical Islamic groups including Muslims Against Crusades (MAC) gathered outside the embassy on the tenth anniversary of the attacks.

The group shouted "USA terrorists" and brandished anti-American placards.

Several members of the Muslim groups made anti-American speeches following the flag burning.

California: Three female Vietnamese coffee shop workers cited for being topless

San Jose police officers doing a routine check of a Vietnamese coffee shop Sunday evening cited three young female workers who they said were serving patrons while topless.

The women, ages 22, 22 and 23, are employees of the Quyen Cafe, located at 1692 Tully Road, according to police. The women were accused of public nudity, a violation of municipal code, and will have to appear in criminal court, according to officer Jose Garcia.
Because the women were cited and not arrested, police did not release their names.

A woman who answered the cafe's phone said she didn't work this weekend and then passed the phone to another woman who said the charges weren't true. Neither would identify themselves, and the second woman would not answer questions.

Garcia said the officers were in full uniform when they walked into the coffee shop about 8:30 p.m. and immediately saw the topless servers.
Quyen Cafe is one of about 20 coffee shops concentrated in a 3-square-mile area of a Vietnamese business area bounded by Story and Tully roads that recently drew public ire for using scantily clad or seminude female servers.

"The police department is aware that some establishments have had employees working as waitresses or bartenders while seminude or topless," said Garcia, adding that in some cases workers have worn transparent clothing.
The owners of the Quyen Café, were not cited by police. However, "that's not to say the city.

The next challenge for California’s ban on gay marriage comes today when the state’s highest court considers whether gay marriage opponents have the legal standing to defend it in court.

The state Supreme Court will hear arguments on the issue.

US District Judge Vaughn Walker ruled in August 2010 that the 2008 ban, known as Proposition 8, should be lifted.

Then, opponents applied for – and won – a stay while they appealed the decision.

Judge Walker’s verdict is being considered by the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeal, which says it will not make a ruling until the Supreme Court decides whether the gay rights opponents have the legal standing to bring the case.

Anti-gay group ProtectMarriage.com wants to challenge the ruling but state officials have refused the defend the ban.

Like many other people, I went to last Saturday’s protest in East London first and foremost to oppose the far right English Defence League and to defend the Muslim community against EDL thuggery.

But I also wanted to stand in solidarity with Muslims who oppose far right Islamists. These fundamentalists threaten and intimidate the Muslim community; especially fellow Muslims who don’t conform to their harsh, intolerant interpretation of Islam. To varying degrees, both the Islamists and the EDL menace Muslim people.

In addition, I wanted to be visible as a gay man, to demonstrate that East London is not and never will be a “Gay-Free Zone” and to show that most lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people are not anti-Muslim; that there are LGBTs who want to work in solidarity with Muslim people to oppose all prejudice, discrimination and violence.

To these ends, my human rights campaign colleague Ashley McAlister and I joined the anti-EDL protest, carrying double-sided placards which read on one side: “Stop EDL & far right Islamists. No to ALL hate” and on the other side: “Gays & Muslims UNITE! Stop the EDL”.

We got dirty looks from a small number of left-wing and LGBT anti-EDL protesters, some of whom said explicitly that our placards were “insensitive…provocative…inappropriate…divisive” and that I am “racist…fascist…anti-Muslim.”

There was also hostility from a minority of Muslims who were part of the anti-EDL demonstration, including attempts to snatch and rip my placard. These fanatics mostly objected to the slogan: “Gays & Muslims UNITE! Stop the EDL”. I was surrounded several times throughout the day by angry Muslim youths who ordered me: “You must remove this placard…You can’t walk here with these words…We don’t allow gays in this area…Gays are not permitted here…We don’t have gays in Tower Hamlets.”

When I suggested that LGBT Muslims must also be defended against the EDL, I was told: “Gays can’t be Muslims…We will never accept them (LGBT Muslims)…They can’t come around here…We won’t allow it.”

My response was to engage with these Muslims hotheads and argue against them. The discussions got very heated; at times even menacing and scary. There were moments when I thought I was going to be physically attacked. Thankfully, this did not happen, probably because there were police nearby and, more significantly, because several Muslims intervened to defend my right to be there and to express my viewpoint. Some Muslims even thanked me for joining the anti-EDL protest.

In the course of the arguments, I diffused the hostility of quite a few Muslim critics. I suggested that love and compassion were core Islamic values and that even if Muslims personally disapproved of homosexuality there is nothing in the Qu’ran that sanctions hatred or discrimination against LGBT people. Several eventually agreed that homophobia was wrong. Some shook my hand and parted with a more ‘live and let live’ attitude – a big improvement on their initial response.

This change in attitude as a result of Ashley and I being willing to engage in dialogue was really positive and inspiring. It shows how important and effective such an engagement can be. We need more of it.

Interestingly, there was very little overt, identifiable Muslim hostility to our placard slogan: “Stop EDL & far right Islamists. No to ALL hate.” There were a few nasty, aggressive looks but that’s all. Indeed, several Muslims indicated that they also oppose the Islamist far right. They realise that extremist groups like Islam4UK and Hizb ut-Tahrir, which want to establish a religious dictatorship, threaten the human rights of mainstream Muslims. These fundamentalists have a similar bigoted agenda to the EDL and BNP.

Our experience on Saturday is further evidence that we need an East End Gay Pride that goes through the heart of the Muslim community in E1, to engage with the Muslim communities and build mutual understanding.

Interestingly, there were lots of LGBT protesters against the EDL. But I never saw a single one with a gay badge, placard, t-shirt or rainbow flag. It was as if they’d all gone back in the closet. Why? Normally, on other demos, they always proclaim their LGBT identity. How strange. Ashley McAlister and I were the only visibly gay protesters in the entire anti-EDL demonstration.

The people who called for the anti-EDL protest to be called off were mistaken. In the absence of a visible counter-protest, the EDL would have been able to rally unchallenged and claim a victory. It would have sent the wrong signal if the EDL had been permitted to claim any part of East London as its own.

Saturday’s peaceful protest against the EDL was important because it showed that most of our communities are united in solidarity and that we will not be divided by the hate-mongering of the far right.

What too many anti-fascists refuse to acknowledge is that Islamist fundamentalism mirrors the right-wing ideology of the EDL (and the BNP). In fact, the Islamist goals are much more dangerous. They want to establish a theocratic tyranny, ban trade unions and political parties and deny women equal human rights. They endorse hatred and violence against Jewish, Hindu and LGBT people. Muslims who don’t follow their particular brand of Islam would face severe persecution in their Islamist state. These fanatical sects condone terrorism and the suicide bombing of innocent civilians. Not even the BNP and EDL are this extreme.

The failure of many people on the Left to speak out against Islamist fundamentalism is de facto collusion with extremism and a betrayal of the Muslim majority. It also creates a political vacuum, which the EDL is seeking to exploit and manipulate.

Some anti-fascists argue that we should not condemn the Islamists because this will fuel anti-Muslim sentiment. Wrong. Protesting against the fundamentalists and defending mainstream Muslims is actually the most effective way to undermine Islamophobia.

In the absence of a left-wing critique of the Islamist far right, the EDL is able to pose as the sole critic of Islamist extremism and to mount indiscriminate attacks on the whole Muslim community.

This silence and inaction by many on the left is objectively (albeit unintentionally) colluding with both fundamentalist fanaticism and anti-Muslim prejudice.

To be credible and effective, opponents of the EDL need to be consistent by also taking a stand against right-wing Islamists. Only this way can we offer a principled alternative to the EDL that isolates and targets the extremists without demonising the whole Muslim population.

A TWISTED brother and sister are facing jail after they were spotted having sex in a train station lift.Richard Finlayson, 21, and sibling Kirsty, 18, romped in the elevator as they were filmed by CCTV cameras.The shocking 15-minute clip showed them exiting the lift — only to return a short time later to have sex AGAIN.And as they left for a second time Richard gave Kirsty a £20 note.The depraved pair were later arrested by police after a railway worker at Motherwell Station raised the alarm.

Last night a family friend said the revelations had left the pair's family "destroyed".

It came after Richard, of Carluke, Lanarkshire, and Kirsty of Lesmahagow, admitted having unlawful sexual intercourse in June last year.

Hamilton Sheriff Court heard how they left an 11-year-old boy who was with them on the platform during their illicit tryst.

Depute fiscal Amanda Gallagher said: "They both went into the lift and were seen having sexual intercourse on the CCTV.
"Both accused then exited the lift for a short period before returning and continuing having sexual intercourse.

"Both accused then stood up and left the lift. At which point Mr Finlayson was seen giving his sister some money."
The court was told Kirsty Finlayson had admitted the sordid act to police.

But she denied she'd had sex for cash — while Richard said he gave her the £20 "as a brother, not for payment".

Last night the family friend said: "We're devastated. I was sickened when I heard about it.

"Most of the family knew nothing about it until letters for the case came in.
"We can't believe it. It is a nightmare."

Sheriff Ray Small ordered Richard to be placed on the sex offenders' register. The brother and sister will be sentenced next month.

I don’t see too many men write to you, so hopefully I might be the start of something new. But, anyways, I’m kind of in an odd situation between my brother and my girlfriend.

So, my girl and I have been together for about a year and a half, and she‘s quickly become a family favorite. My family loves her, as she‘s become very close to my mother. But, the problem comes from her disapproval of my younger brother’s lifestyle. My 19-year old brother is a gay man. Before he even came out to the family we had always known and just prepared ourselves for it. My girlfriend was raised in a very religious home and of course disapproves of homosexuality. And of course before he came out to the family we were too. But instead of trying to force something out of him, or try to get religious on him, we just decided to let him make his own choices, and silently accept it. We just treat it as, “it is what it is, no matter what he’s family FIRST.”

On numerous occasions my girlfriend always decides to debate with him about whether he’s living the “right lifestyle.” I’m a pretty laid-back kind of guy and I just don’t like to get into arguments or disagreements and such. But seriously, I’m fed up with it! She’s the woman that I can see myself marrying, but my little brother is ALWAYS gonna be in my life, no matter what his preference is. How do I tell my girl that I think her constant vocal opinions are disrespectful to me? I don’t want to come off rude, and potentially start an argument bigger than this whole situation. I’m just at my fullest level of annoyance and need help on addressing her. – My Brother vs. My Girlfriend

Dear My Brother vs. My Girlfriend,

Uhm, well, let’s see here. Your brother or your girlfriend? Hmmmm. I’m going to bet on your brother, and your girlfriend is either going to have to get with the program, or kick rocks.

This is what I don’t understand. If your family has come to terms with your brother’s sexuality, and you say the family always knew, and was just waiting on him to come forward, then why are you letting a woman, whom you’ve been only dating for a year and half, cause riff in your family? I wish I might let some outside person dictate to me, or my family, and especially get in heated debates with my sibling, and she doesn’t know the entire situation. Chile, back the “F” up and stay in your lane, and place. This doesn’t involve her, and nor should it be her concern. What does his sexuality have to do with her? Why is she making it her personal crusade to tell him how to live his life? Her issues, challenges, and problems are exactly that – her issues, challenges, and problems.

Look, I understand you don’t want to get in the middle of it, but you and your family are already in the middle of it. I’m sure your brother can hold his own with her, but I’m also certain he may feel like a lone warrior as you watch your girlfriend berate, demean, and judge him. He may feel as if you’re not on his side, and pitting with your girlfriend. You definitely don’t want to get on his bad side. Trust me!

Stop sitting by idly and letting it go on if it bothers you. Why are you afraid to speak up and say something to her? If it bothers you that much, and you’re fed up, then just like you wrote in and told me you wish she would stop disrespecting you, your brother, and your family, simply pull her to the side and let her know how you don’t appreciate it. Let her know how you find it rude and uncalled for. Get some balls and man up! He’s your brother! She’s your girlfriend. Look at those statements again, “Your brother. Your girlfriend.” (Giving you the side eye). Don’t get whipped on her box, or perhaps you’re already whipped.

This is the time and moment to start being honest with one another about everything, especially if you see yourself marrying her. If you two cannot come to some level of civility of understanding, compromise, and respect, then it will only fester and you’ll find yourself resenting her and her opinion. And, no, not everyone needs to agree on everything, we can agree to disagree, but if this is causing you to become annoyed, and you find it disrespectful and rude, then stop letting it rile under your skin. Let her know how you feel, why you feel the way you do, and steps to rectify it. SOLUTIONS people!

And, let’s make a correction for the record. Being gay is not a lifestyle. It’s not an option on an application form, and you can check the box. Hip Hop is a lifestyle. Rich is a lifestyle. Poor is a lifestyle. Vegan is a lifestyle. You get my drift? If you and your family always knew your brother was gay, then you know he was born that way, correct? He didn’t just wake up one day and say, “I’m going to be gay. Today, I’m going to start living my life as a gay man.” You’re smarter than that. Ο Άντερς Μπέρινγκ Μπράιβικ, ο οποίος έχει ομολογήσει ότι τον περασμένο μήνα σκότωσε 77 ανθρώπους σε δύο επιθέσεις στο Όσλο και στο νορβηγικό νησί Ουτόγια, θα εμφανιστεί σήμερα και πάλι ενώπιον δικαστηρίου.

Η σημερινή συνεδρίαση του δικαστηρίου στην οποία θα εμφανιστεί ο Μπράιβικ στο δικαστήριο θα εξετάσει τις συνθήκες κράτησής του και θα γίνει κεκλεισμένων των θυρών κατόπιν αιτήματος της αστυνομίας, που δηλώνει ότι θέλει να αποφύγει ο Μπράιβικ να επικοινωνήσει με πιθανούς συνεργούς του.

Μέχρι στιγμής η αστυνομία εκτιμά ότι ο Μπράιβικ έδρασε μόνος του.

Prague 'gay pride': Czech capital hosts maiden march

Several thousand people have marched through Prague in the Czech capital's first "gay pride" festival.

Revellers in fancy dress waved rainbow flags and blew whistles as they marched through the city centre.

Some 300 police guarded the colourful event, which had stoked controversy and counter-marches.

Earlier this week, a top aide to conservative President Vaclav Klaus, Deputy Chancellor Petr Hajek, labelled gay people as deviants.

Mr Hajek criticised Prague Mayor Bohuslav Svoboda for supporting "deviant fellow citizens."

His comments provoked a joint statement in support of the five-day gay pride festival from the ambassadors of 13 Western nations, including the UK and US.

But their letter drew an angry response from Czech President Vaclav Klaus, who refused to distance himself from Mr Hajek. The deputy chancellor had previously drawn criticism for rejecting Darwinism and calling the dead al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden a "media fiction".

A Cuban man and transgender woman are set to marry in what is being seen as the country's first "gay wedding".

Same sex marriage is illegal in Cuba, but bride Wendy Iriepa is legally a woman after undergoing one of the first state sanctioned sex changes in 2007.

Her fiance, Ignacio Estrada, is a noted dissident and gay rights activist in Cuba and is also HIV positive.

The couple say the wedding, timed to coincide with Fidel Castro's birthday, is a "gift" for the former leader.

Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people faced official discrimination for many years in Cuba, and in the early days of the revolution many were sent to labour camps to stamp out their "counter-revolutionary" values.

But since taking over from his brother as Cuba's leader, Raul Castro has introduced a series of gay rights reforms, including legalising sex change operations.Ms Iriepa underwent her treatment at the National Centre for Sex Education, which is headed by Raul Castro's daughter, Mariela.

"It's wonderful. It will be the first 'gay' wedding in Cuba," Ms Iriepa told the AFP news agency.

"I don't want this to be seen as a political act. Even if it's a gift to Fidel, I'm not worried about what the government will think."

'Ode to freedom'

Mr Estrada said he had always considered himself to be gay but that "with Wendy, it's totally different".

"Today, I don't know what I am - all I know is that I am in love with a woman," he said.

The wedding was "not a provocation", said Mr Estrada, but an acknowledgment of their relationship.

Boy George has told of the anti-gay abuse he suffered from fellow prisoners.

The singer, who was jailed for four months in 2009 for falsely imprisoning a male escort, told National Prison Radio about his experiences.

He said: “When you first arrive, it’s terrifying, I don’t care how hard you are. But eventually you just go, ‘You know what? I’m here!’ Acceptance is a huge thing.”

He added: “[The bullying] was mainly young guys shouting out ‘batty boy’ and things like that. It was nothing I hadn’t heard before and I dealt with it in the way I would on the street:

“Telling me I’m gay is not news to me. Why are you telling me I’m gay? Yeah, I know, I’m 50.”

George has previously said that his sense of humour helped him through his punishment.

“I’m not the sort of person who can maintain a dark perspective on life for very long,” he told Metro last year. “Having had a good sense of humour is very useful in certain situations. Being insanely optimistic has its advantages.”

Report calls for equality commission to be scrapped

The Equality and Human Rights Commission contributes “very little to meaningful equality” and should be dismantled, a think tank report has recommended.

The body, headed by Trevor Phillips, has been harshly criticised by gay rights advocates in recent weeks after calling for religious homophobes to be given ‘accommodations’ and ‘compromises’ in the workplace.

According to the report by think tank Civitas, the quango, which costs millions of pounds every year, could be scrapped at “no obvious cost” to the public.

The commission was criticised last year for its financial and hiring procedures, which were said to be “seriously flawed”.

The report, Small Corroding Words by Jon Gower Davis, makes little mention of LGBT issues, although it does question the time and resources spent by the EHRC on the “very small minority” of LGBT people.

It says: “Yet while all minorities, qua minority, are equal and many indeed are called, few are chosen for the level of concern and comment devoted to LGB and transgender people.”

The report says the commission’s outlook is impractical as it wishes for “life outcomes be entirely divorced from health limitations, cultural practices and lifestyles”.

The EHRC is also criticised for blaming Britain for inequalities when other factors are likely to be to blame, “illogical” use of statistics and having a “narrow approach to social policy” which is neither useful nor reasonable.

The Civitas report gives several examples of “serious flaws” in the EHRC’s thinking. One – cited in the EHRC’s ‘How Fair is Britain?’ report – is the fact that men are more likely than women to die in work-related accidents, which the Civitas report says Britain is “inaccurately blame[d]” for.

In another example, the Civitas report says: “Infant mortality rates for Pakistanis are affected by a somewhat higher prevalence of inter-cousin marriage, which make congenital birth defects more probable. This is an issue over which British policy has little direct control. Yet Britain is still regarded as being responsible for the outcomes.”

A spokesman for the report said: “Ultimately, abolishing the EHRC itself would not just be a cost-saving exercise. It may well present an opportunity to channel resources into addressing the most pertinent issues holding back equality and fairness.”

Mark Hammond, chief executive of the EHRC, said: “There are many reasons why people experience different levels of prosperity, health and happiness, but in some cases this can be because of discrimination and unfairness.

“No one blames Britain for that but it’s our job to start a debate on issues where we could see better outcomes for people suffering unfair disadvantages. Mr Phillips does not hold the views attributed to him by Civitas.”

The EHRC stated last month that it believes ‘reasonable adjustments’ could be made for religious employees in the same way that disabled people are accommodated in the workplace. This could mean allowing anti-gay Christian workers to swap shifts to avoid gay people.

After strong criticism from Stonewall, Peter Tatchell, trade unions and some MPs, the body appears to have decided not to argue for ‘reasonable adjustments’.

Former Stonewall chief executive Angela Mason, who is the body’s only LGBT commissioner, said this week that the EHRC had come to a “preliminary view” on the matter.

In response to emails from concerned PinkNews.co.uk readers, she wrote: “The commission has already decided not to put forward ‘reasonable adjustment’ arguments if we do continue with our intervention.”

However, the commission has refused to confirmed Ms Mason’s comments.

CJ de Mooi, star of BBC 2′s Eggheads, has revealed that he was banned from presenting prizes to the winners of the British Chess Championship because he was wearing a Stonewall ‘Some people are gay. Get over it’ T-shirt.

De Mooi, the current president of the English Chess Federation had spent the day in Sheffield at the championship wearing the pro-gay equality T-shirt.

“At this morning’s prize giving ceremony of the Darwin Strategic British Chess Championships 2011 an arbiter approached me saying she had ‘personal reservations’ about me wearing a Stonewall t-shirt when presenting prizes to juniors. It was apparently inappropriate for me to wear something mentioning ‘sexuality’ in such an environment,” De Mooi said in a statement posted online.

“I did not consider this an issue as I had worn it the previous day in the playing hall and no objections were raised. I am fully CRB checked and was registering my public support of a charity.”

De Mooi gave organisers the decision for him to allow him to either wear the T-shirt and present all the prizes or none. The organisers decided it would be none.

Laura Doughty, deputy chief executive of Stonewall UK, told the Guardian website: “We think our T-shirts are lovely and don’t see why anyone would object to anyone wearing one, least of all chess players.”

On Twitter, De Mooi posted: “I’ve offered my resignation to the ECF [English Chess Federation] and I think I’ll give up and go to sleep too.”

Laura Barnes, the official referred to has denied that De Mooi was banned from wearing the T-shirt. She claims in a statement that she was “worried that children who had come for chess may be exploited in photo opportunities for a different issue/charity.” She also wrote that De Mooi’s T-shirt might not be considered as “smart-casual” as dictated by the event’s dress code.

California Supreme Court to hear gay marriage case next month

California’s highest court is to hear arguments on September 6th around the state’s gay marriage ban.

The Supreme Court will consider whether gay marriage opponents in the state have the legal standing to challenge a court ruling overturning the 2008 ban, known as Proposition 8.

US District Judge Vaughn Walker ruled in August 2010 that the ban should be lifted.

Then, opponents applied for – and won – a stay while they appealed the decision.

The 9th US Circuit Court of Appeal is currently considering that decision but says it will not make a ruling until the state Supreme Court rules on whether gay marriage opponents have the legal standing to appeal the original judgement.
Judge Walker’s ruling was recently upheld by a federal court.

Gay rights opponents claimed that because he is gay, he could not approach the case without bias. They also argued that he planned to marry his partner but could show no evidence for this.

Chief US District Judge James Ware ruled in June that the fact Judge Walker is in a relationship would not make him “so interested in marrying the person that he would be unable to exhibit the impartiality which, it is presumed, all federal judges maintain”.

Liverpool’s Homotopia art festival wins three-year funding

Liverpool’s Homotopia art festival has been granted funding for the next three years.

The annual art and culture event will receive £70,000 a year for the next three years from Arts Council England.

Homotopia was one of 1,300 organisations which applied for the funding. It was initially judged to be ineligible but organisers complained and the claim was reassessed.

Homotopia director Gary Everett said: “Over the last eight years we have grown from an annual local arts festival into an organisation delivering a national and international programme of arts, social justice and education initiatives 365 days of the year.

“I believe this funding acknowledges the exceptional quality of the art we deliver and the valuable work we do to tackle hate crime, bullying and prejudice through our award winning Project Triangle. It reflects our commitment to increasing social cohesion through our engagement with diverse communities, young people and the elderly who would often otherwise feel excluded from arts venues or gay culture.”

He added: “With this support and the continuing support of Liverpool City Council we can engage with more artists, writers, producers, dancers and performers to reach new communities.”

A spokesperson for Arts Council England said: “Through our national portfolio Homotopia will make a valuable contribution to the vibrant festival offer in England, especially in Liverpool where they form part of a strong festival calendar which celebrates the diversity of the city’s communities.”

Homotopia started in November 2004 with a handful of arts events. Until last year, it was Liverpool’s only LGBT celebration. Previous participating artists have included Sarah Waters, Nigel Charnock, Sadie Lee, David Hoyle, Gary Clarke and Armistead Maupin.

York Pride has remembered murdered Ugandan gay rights campaigner David Kato, who studied in the city.

Mr Kato, who was found dead at his home in Uganda in January, had studied at York University’s Centre for Applied Human Rights in 2009 and 2010.

On Saturday, marchers at York Pride in Rowntree Park released coloured balloons as a tribute to his life and work.

Mr Kato was attacked and killed several months after he was named by a newspaper’s anti-gay campaign, which called for gays and lesbians to be hanged.

He won a court case in November to prevent the publication outing more people.

Student in gay suicide case wants charges dismissed

Lawyers for a student accused over the suicide of his gay roommate say the charges against him should be dismissed and that prosecutors withheld evidence.

Dharun Ravi, 19, of Plainsboro, New Jersey, is accused of invasion of privacy and bias intimidation in the case of Rutgers University student Tyler Clementi, who jumped to his death last September after believing his sex session with another man had been secretly filmed.

Clementi, 18, was not out. The talented violinist’s death sparked a national conversation about homophobic bullying and LGBT teen suicides.

Ravi, who is pleading not guilty to the charges, is accused of setting up a webcam in their shared room and broadcasting the scenes.

Prosecutors say he filmed Clementi because the latter was gay. Ravi faces jail if convicted of bias intimidation.

His attorney Steve Altman says there is no evidence of any bullying or homophobic bias, the New Jersey Star-Ledger reports.

Mr Altman is seeking to have the charges dismissed and says the prosecution must allow evidence which includes documents from Clementi’s computer and a note found in his dorm room.

Another student who allegedly viewed the footage, Molly Wei, 19, of West Windsor, is expected to testify against Mr Ravi as part of a plea deal.

Alexander McQueen left £100,000 to THT and £50,000 to his dogs in will

Fashion designer Alexander McQueen, who took his own life last year, has left £100,000 to HIV and sexual health charity the Terrence Higgins Trust (THT) and £50,000 to his pet dogs.

McQueen, who was openly gay, took a cocktail of drugs including cocaine before hanging himself the day before his mother’s funeral in February 2010. He had a history of depression and anxiety and had researched how to commit suicide on the internet before he died.

McQueen left a fortune of more than £16m in his will that included £100,000 each to THT, Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, the London Buddhist Centre and the Blue Cross animal welfare charity.

Sir Nick Partridge, chief executive of THT, said: “Alexander McQueen was a friend of THT. He supported us for over 12 years, working alongside the charity to raise awareness of HIV as well as vital funds. We’re touched that he chose to leave this generous legacy, which will be used to support those living with and affected by HIV in the UK.”

McQueen also left £50,000 to his godson as well as to each of his nephews and nieces. He left a quarter of a million each to his three sisters and two brothers.

Gay journalist Johann Hari expected to lose Orwell Prize

Gay journalist Johann Hari is expected to lose his Orwell Prize over allegations of plagiarism.

The 32-year-old was suspended by the Independent newspaper last month after bloggers spotted that he had used old quotes in interviews without attributing them.

Since then, further allegations have been made, including that he fabricated quotes, invented encounters and used a fake name to defend himself and smear other journalists on the internet.

In 2008, he became the youngest person to win the Orwell Prize, the prestigious journalism award. Since the claims emerged, the Council of the Orwell Prize, which is overseen by the Media Standards Trust, has been investigating his submissions.

Yesterday, a spokesman for the council said it had reached a “clear and unanimous decision” on whether Mr Hari should hand back the prize, but added it had been asked by the Independent to delay announcing its decision until the newspaper has finished its own investigation.

According to numerous reports, the council decided to strip him of the award.

The council said: “After extensive deliberation, the Council arrived at a clear and unanimous decision, which drew from the combined journalistic and academic expertise of its members.

“It also considered a representation by Johann Hari in its deliberation, and appropriate weight was placed upon it. The Council of the Orwell Prize is fully satisfied that it has adopted the appropriate procedure for an exercise of this kind.

“The Independent has now requested that the Council consider further representations by Johann Hari before announcing the decision. However, it would appear that Johann Hari is not permitted to make any further representations whilst The Independent’s investigation is conducted.

“In these circumstances, the Council of the Orwell Prize has reluctantly consented to delay any formal announcement as to the status of the 2008 Orwell Prize for Journalism until The Independent has completed its own investigation. We will take no further action and make no further statements until that time.”

Chris Blackhurst, the Independent’s new editor, told the Daily Telegraph: “We had hoped the Council of the Orwell Prize would delay reaching their decision about Johann Hari’s prize until The Independent had completed its own inquiry – due in less than two months.

“We’re disappointed that the Council appear to have reached a verdict without Johann being able to defend himself fully.”

Mr Hari, who has written extensively about gay rights, has not commented.

New York mayor officiates aides’ wedding

Michael Bloomberg, the mayor of New York City, presided over the marriage of two of his aides yesterday.

He officiated the wedding ceremony of John Feinblatt, his chief policy advisor, and Jonathan Mintz, the city’s commissioner for consumer affairs, who have been together for 14 years.

The couple married at Gracie Mansion with their two young daughters, Maeve and Georgia.

Mr Bloomberg, who joked that the couple better not be late for work the next day, addressed the couple in front of around 150 guests.

He said: “It’s taken New York State a long time to recognise what the two of you must have known instinctively: that two people who want to be together, and raise a family together, and spend the rest of their lives together – have a relationship and a beautiful family – that, in every way, deserves to be recognised and commemorated equally under the eye of the law.

He will take over Davina McCall’s role, while Emma Willis will present the spin-off, Big Brother’s Little Bit on the Side.

Obama signs certification to end military gay ban

On Friday, President Obama and two military leaders signed a certification declaring that lifting the ban on openly gay troops will not harm the military.

This means that the ban. known as Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell, will officially end in mid-September, allowing gay and lesbian troops to finally be open about their sexual orientation.

In a statement, the president said: “As of Sept 20th, service members will no longer be forced to hide who they are in order to serve our country.

“Today, we have taken the final major step toward ending the discriminatory Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell law that undermines our military readiness and violates American principles of fairness and equality.”

He added: “Our military will no longer be deprived of the talents and skills of patriotic Americans just because they happen to be gay or lesbian.”

Mr Obama promised to repeal the 17-year-old law in his 2008 election campaign.

He met with stiff opposition from some military leaders, while some gay rights campaigners accused him of not moving fast enough.

US Republican presidential candidate and former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty has hit out at gay marriage again.

Mr Pawlenty was speaking on CNN’s State of the Union on Sunday, the first day of marriage equality in New York.

He defended his anti-gay marriage views, saying that gay couples’ unions are not equivalent to heterosexual marriage and that recognition of gay marriage would damage society.

He said: “I don’t think all domestic relationships are the same as traditional marriage. Marriage between a man and a woman is something that should remain elevated socially, culturally, and practically, legally, morally in our society.”

Mr Pawlenty, who said that marriage was about procreation and raising children, was pressed on whether he believes marriage equality would harm society.

He replied: “I think society devalues traditional marriage by saying all other domestic relationships are the same as traditional marriage, you then dilute and devalue traditional marriage.”

The politician, who has said he supports keeping the ban on openly gay troops, was ‘glittered’ by gay rights campaigners last month.

Gay couples have begun to marry in ceremonies all over New York state during the first day that same-sex weddings are legal in the state.

Officials in New York City and other cities across the state expect to conduct hundreds of ceremonies for couples who have waited years and in some cases decades to marry one another.

Judges waived the usually mandatory 24-hour waiting period between applying for a licence and exchanging vows, with some couples taking part in ceremonies at midnight including that of activists Kitty Lambert and Cheryle Rudd who married at a ceremony held at Niagara Falls, which was lit up in rainbow colours,

In the last fortnight, 1,728 gay couples in New York City have applied to marry.

“This is long overdue,” Matthew Ryan, mayor of Binghamton told the New York Times. He was due to conduct the weddings of at least two couples in person. “It really is a great day for all of us who believe in inclusiveness and equal rights for everybody.”

The state legalised gay marriage last month.

Five other states – Massachusetts, Connecticut, Iowa, New Hampshire and Vermont – and the District of Columbia – currently allow gay couples to marry. However, unlike civil partnerships in the United Kingdom, gay marriage in the United States is not given federal recognition and is not recognised in most states.

Appeal for witnesses after homophobic attack in central London

Police are appealing for witnesses after a gay man was beaten in an unprovoked attack in central London in the early hours of this morning (Friday).

The victim, 42, was walking up Villiers Street in the Charing Cross area at around 3:40am. As he turned on to The Strand, he was attacked by a man and a woman, both aged between 25 and 30.

They pushed him to the ground and kicked him in the head repeatedly before running off in the direction of Trafalgar Square.

He was treated in hospital for facial injuries and was discharged this morning.

Police are treating the attack as motivated by homophobia and have released CCTV images of two suspects.

The first suspect is described as a black female with a slim build and shoulder-length hair. She was wearing a red top and jeans.

The other suspect is described as a black male who was wearing a white t-shirt, white bottoms and black trainers.

Investigating officer DC Steve Beech said: “This was a completely unprovoked attack on the victim. I am confident that someone will recognise the two people in these pictures.

“There were a lot of people in the area at the time and I want to ask anyone who knows who these people are, or who has any information about the incident to come forward. Any detail, however small, could help us to piece together what happened.”

Two years ago, 62-year-old Ian Baynham died after he was punched and kicked in the head while on a night out in Trafalgar Square. His assailants shouted anti-gay slurs as they attacked him.

In April, gay events organiser and socialite Philip Sallon was badly injured when he was attacked in Piccadilly.

One in four Massachusetts gay teenagers ‘are homeless’

A study of teenagers in the US state of Massachusetts suggests that one in four are homeless.

The study, carried out by the Children’s Hospital Boston, looked at the sexual orientation and home status of 6,317 teenagers from data in the 2005 and 2007 Massachusetts Youth Risk Behaviour Surveys.

Researchers found that while less than five per cent identified as lesbian, gay or bisexual, they accounted for 19 per cent of all those who were defined as homeless.

Homelessness was defined as having no fixed, regular, adequate place to sleep at night.

Just 3.2 per cent of exclusively heterosexual students were defined as homeless, compared to 15 per cent of bisexual students and 25 per cent of lesbian and gay students.

Twenty per cent of students who said they were unsure of their sexual orientation were defined as homeless.

Study lead author Heather Corliss said: “The high risk of homelessness among sexual minority teens is a serious problem requiring immediate attention.

“These teens face enormous risks and all types of obstacles to succeeding in school and are in need of a great deal of assistance

Five students sue Minnesota school district over anti-gay bullying

Five students who say they were victims of homophobic bullying are suing a Minnesota school district over an “epidemic of harassment”.

They say that the Anoka-Hennepin School District, the state’s largest, failed to protect them and that a “gag policy” restricting teachers’ ability to discuss gay and lesbian issues made the problem worse.

According to the lawsuit, filed at the US District Court for the District of Minnesota, the students faced daily abuse, threats, violence and humiliation, including “being urinated on, being stabbed in the neck with a pencil, being choked, being pushed into walls, being shoved forcefully into lockers [and] having objects thrown at them in class”.

The complaint adds that many attacks took place in view of school officials but no action was taken. Instead, the bullied students were told to “ignore” the harassment or were even told they were to blame for it, through their behaviour or appearance.

Three of the five students are LGB – one is lesbian, one is gay and one is bisexual. The other two are heterosexual and were bullied because they were perceived to be gay. One has gay parents.

The lesbian student attempted suicide after being forced to leave her school, the lawsuit says. All of the students suffered anxiety or depression and their grades fell as a result of the harassment.

In the nine-month period between November 2009 and July 2010, at least four LGBT students in the district killed themselves.

The students, aged between 14 and 18, are being represented by the National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) and the Southern Poverty Law Center.

NCLR executive director Kate Kendell said: “There is something seriously wrong in the Anoka-Hennepin School District, and district officials know it.

“In school after school, kids who are perceived as gay are harassed mercilessly until they drop out, melt down or lash back.

“This epidemic of harassment – unlike anything we’ve seen in neighbouring districts – is plainly fuelled by the district’s shameful and illegal policy singling out LGBT people and LGBT people alone for total exclusion from acknowledgement within the classroom.”

The lawsuit demands the end of the district’s ‘neutrality policy’ on gay and lesbian issues, as well as damages for the plaintiffs.

Anoka-Hennepin School District’s policy says that “in the course of their professional duties [teachers must] remain neutral on matters regarding sexual orientation.”

While the school district argues that this is a “neutrality policy”, gay rights campaigners call it a “gag clause” which prevents teachers from supporting LGBT students and stops them acting fully to prevent homophobic bullying.

After a spate of suicides, the US Justice and Education departments began investigating the district last November.

Gay rights activists dressed as ‘barbarians’ glittered one of Marcus Bachmann’s counselling clinics after footage emerged of an employee telling a gay man he could become straight.

Mr Bachmann, husband of the anti-gay Republican presidential candidate Michele Bachmann, said in a 2010 radio interview that gays are “barbarians” and need to be “disciplined”.

His wife has already been targeted by protesters armed with pink glitter.

Campaigners arrived at Mr Bachmann’s clinic in Minnesota on Thursday morning and told an employee: “We came to see Marcus. We need to be disciplined.”

When she asked them to leave, they showered the office lobby in glitter, chanting: “You can’t pray away the gay, baby, I was born this way!”

Outside, the campaigners, led by known glitterer Nick Espinosa, shouted: “Marcus – what’s in your closet?”

Mrs Bachmann has been criticised for attacking state spending while her family’s clinic is a recipient of state and federal payments.

The politician has a long track record of anti-gay remarks, including claiming that gay people suffer “sexual dysfunction” and “personal enslavement” and are “specifically recruiting our children”.

Norway: Blast near prime minister's office in Oslo

UK Border Agency begins recording gay asylum claims

The government says the UK Border Agency has begun collecting data on the numbers of asylum claims based on sexual orientation.

In March, immigration minister Damian Green said the data was not being collected and cited “disproportionate cost”.

Campaigners for LGBT asylum seekers were angry at the admission and said the coalition government could not keep its promise on protecting those at risk of violence and persecution if it did not record details of cases.

Last July, the Supreme Court ruled that the policy of returning gays and lesbians to dangerous countries under the belief that they could be “discreet” about their sexual orientation must end.

Following this, the Home Office told the UK Border Agency that relevant cases should be “flagged and recorded” to ensure that rules were not being breached and that cases were being monitored.

In a statement given to LGBT Asylum News, a Home Office spokesman said: “The government has made it clear that it is committed to stopping the removal of asylum seekers who have genuinely had to leave particular countries because of their sexual orientation or gender identification.

“From July 1st we have begun to record data on claims brought on the grounds of sexual orientation on our case information database.

“We are also reviewing all first asylum decisions in these cases taken between April 1st and June 30th to evaluate the success of our new guidance and training.”

Paul Canning, of LGBT Asylum News, said: “This is good news and puts the UK ahead of most other countries. Why they’re not proudly announcing it is very odd. It means that in the future we can know whether the system is working or not based on some facts.”

“However this doesn’t affect cases now in the system and of course serious concerns remain about their treatment, as well as decreasing access to good legal advice.”

Torchwood star John Barrowman says a gay sex scene banned by the BBC is vital to the storyline.

Although US audiences will see the raunchy scenes with Barrowman’s bisexual character Captain Jack Harkness, BBC bosses decided they would be too explicit for a UK audience, even after the watershed.

Speaking to The Sun, the actor said: “It’s not gratuitous sex, it facilitates the story. It’s nothing they grab just to put on the camera and sensationalise it.”

He added that viewers would find out more about his character’s past: “You go back into history with Jack and you discover an integral relationship that is part and parcel to what is happening. It’s a massive story.”

A BBC source told the newspaper last week: “It wasn’t that it was a gay scene that worried people, but just the fact it was such an explicit sex scene, full stop.”

A BBC spokeswoman said the gay sex scene and another which involved violence had been cut.

She said: “The UK and US versions of ‘Torchwood’ are slightly different. However, these differences do not change the story in any way and the strong storylines are first and foremost to the series.”

Last month, Barrowman promised Torchwood fans that the new series would be the sexiest yet, with “man sex” and “full-on” nudity.

‘Family’ group wants referendum on California gay education

A California ‘family’ group is seeking a voter referendum on a new state law requiring schools to teach pupils about gay history.

The Capitol Resource Institute, a socially conservative group, has long campaigned against the legislation, which was signed into law last week.

According to the Sacramento Bee, the group’s legislative director Paulo Sibaja has filed a request for a title and summary with the attorney general’s office.

Mr Sibaja said more information about the effort would be given at a press conference on Wednesday.

To win a vote on the legislation, known as the Fair Education Act, the group will have to collect 433,971 signatures.

Democrat Senator Mark Leno, who introduced the bill to the Senate, called the group “extremist” and added: “I think it will be a challenge for them to get the signatures.”

The law makes the state the first in the US to ensure that all children learn about figures such as San Francisco gay rights campaigner Harvey Milk.

It also bans “discriminatory” teaching material.

California law already requires schools to highlight the contributions of women, African-Americans, Mexican Americans and entrepreneurs, among others.

Taliban in Pakistan 'police killing' video

Footage appearing to show the execution-style killing of 16 policemen in the restive north-west of Pakistan has been released by the Taliban.

The video shows policemen lined up on a hillside with their hands tied behind their backs in front of gunmen who berate them and then open fire on them.

The incident is said to date from June when militants crossed the Afghan border and captured police.

Pakistan's army spokesman told the BBC the video appears to be authentic.

A note released alongside the video said that the policemen were captured during a cross-border raid from Afghanistan in June in Pakistan's volatile Dir district.

The bodies were discovered by locals once the militants had left. The BBC received mobile phone footage from a policeman in Dir showing local residents discovering the corpses.
Disturbing footage

The area is regularly targeted by insurgents and hundreds of militants were reported to have descended upon the town of Shalato in a remote corner of Dir close to the border with Afghanistan's Kunar province. At least 25 Pakistani troops were also killed during the prolonged clash. The Pakistani Taliban claimed responsibility for that attack.

The footage released by the Taliban is disturbing. The policemen are lined up on the left with only a few moments to live.

On the right, a local Pakistani Taliban commander accuses them of being the enemies of Islam and says God wants him to punish them.

Then his gunmen open fire and the men are seen collapsing as they are sprayed with bullets. Later, a militant is seen firing shots into the soldiers' heads to ensure they were all dead.

The BBC's Aleem Maqbool in Islamabad says incidents like this make Pakistan bristle with anger when it is told that it is not doing enough to fight militants. But, our correspondent adds, Pakistan's army also stands accused of abuses.

Human rights groups say there is considerable evidence that Pakistan's army has also conducted summary executions of suspected Taliban militants - an accusation the army denies.

"They are merciless terrorists and this is the threat which we are up against. We have suffered the most at the hands of al-Qaeda and its affiliates... At the same time Pakistan has delivered the most against [them]," Maj Gen Athar Abbas, Pakistan's army spokesman, told the BBC.

The army believes the attack was carried out by Pakistani Taliban fighters from Swat, who fled across the border into Afghanistan during the army's offensive there two years ago.

They have since regrouped and have been coming across the border to carry out attacks on isolated checkpoints like the one in Dir manned by the men who were killed.

Correspondents say that securing the long and porous border dividing Pakistan and Afghanistan has been a major challenge for the two countries.

Many of the militant groups that operate on either side of the border are closely linked.

Ben Daniels rejects Rupert Everett’s advice for aspiring gay actors not to come out

Ben Daniels, star of the BBC hit series Cutting It, has dismissed claims made by Hollywood star Rupert Everett that it is better for aspiring gay actors to stay in the closet despite homophobia he experienced at the BBC.

In 2009, Everett told The Observer: “I would not advise any actor necessarily, if he was really thinking of his career, to come out. The fact is that you could not be, and still cannot be, a 25-year-old homosexual trying to make it in the British film business or the American film business or even the Italian film business.”

Daniels told The Stage: “I think [Everett] is a brilliant actor but, hold on, he’s also got a really great career. And I heard him saying in an interview that he’s earned enough money to eat out every night of the year, so it should be put in perspective.

“On the other hand, I know that there is a problem with homophobia in Hollywood. There is at the BBC, too. It’s come up sometimes for some jobs with me, but thankfully someone in the room will say that’s ridiculous. I’ve been around for long enough now that people know I can do it.” Referring to his character in Cutting It, he added: “I have that whole bag-load of serial shagging behind me to prove it.”

“I would never advise anyone to stay in the closet to further their careers – I’m sure it leads to big fat gay ulcers. There are actors I know who won’t come out, and I can see it crippling them as human beings. It’s a great shame that people can’t be who they are in the 21st century, and people won’t let them be who they are.”

Daniels claims that being honest about his sexuality makes his acting better: “There’s nothing that gets in your way then.”

In the interview, Daniels does acknowledge one point that Everett has continually made, a lack of credible LGBT A-list stars. “He is absolutely right to bemoan the lack of out gay A-list movie stars. Of course, there are gay A-list movie stars in existence. It’s just that we, the public, don’t know who they are.

“Lying about one’s sexuality seems to be one of the ridiculous rules of what constitutes being a Hollywood movie star. Obviously, my own experience of working and continuing to work as an out gay actor is exactly that – working as an actor and not as a movie star. I don’t think the two are the same. But the whole hankering after being an A-list movie star as the pinnacle of one’s career seems to somehow denigrate the rest of our profession.”

Sir Elton John says that he won’t “rush” young artists who he has signed to his Rocket Music Entertainment Group company into the studio before they are ready.

The gay star, who has frequently criticised the speed at which talent shows such as the X Factor push up and coming singers into stardom, says that young artists need time to develop their skills first.

Rocket Music already has signed-up Leon Russell, Lily Allen, James Blunt and Sir Elton himself.

Sir Elton tells Music Week, “The worst thing to do is to rush people to have a record out. They’ll make a record when they’re ready and it comes out when it is ready.”

Last year, Sir Elton said: “I’m not a fan of talent shows. I probably wouldn’t have lasted if I’d gone on one. I like Simon Cowell, but what he does is TV entertainment. Obama administration asks court to keep military gay ban for now

The Obama administration has asked an appeals court to reconsider a verdict ruling that the ban on openly gay troops should end immediately.

Last week, the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals ordered the Pentagon to cease enforcing the ban.

The law is to be fully repealed at some point this year but the Obama administration says the ban should not be lifted until the long repeal process has run its course.

The court ruling said that as the US government and Congress concluded that ban was unconstitutional, it cannot be enforced.

The judgement came in response to a legal case filed by Republican gay group Log Cabin Republicans.

Tracy Schmaler, a Justice Department spokeswoman, said in a statement.“The department has filed a motion asking the Ninth Circuit to reconsider its order lifting the stay of the injunction on the ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ policy to avoid short-circuiting the repeal process established by Congress during the final stages of the implementation of repeal.”

She added: “Senior military leaders are expected to make their decision on certifying repeal within the next few weeks.”

R Clarke Cooper, the executive director of Log Cabin Republicans, said: “All this does is further confuse the situation for our men and women in uniform.

“‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ is an offence to American values that should have been gone long ago. It is shameful that a president who has taken credit for opposing the policy is taking extreme measures to keep it on life support.”

President Obama pledged to repeal the 1993 law in his 2008 election campaign but was criticised by gay groups for being slow to act.

In December, the US Senate finally voted to repeal the 17-year ban, which is known as ‘Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell’ because it requires gay and lesbian troops to keep their sexuality secret.

Ben Cohen says father’s murder spurred him to speak out on bullying

Former England rugby union star Ben Cohen has revealed that his father’s death 11 years ago spurred him to create an anti-bullying foundation.

Speaking at London Pride on Saturday, where he joined the parade, Cohen said his father was killed when he stepped in to protect a man who was being beaten.

Peter Cohen, 58, a former nightclub owner, was attacked in October 2000 at a club owned by his older son when trying to break up a fight. He died in hospital a month later.

The married rugby player set up his anti-bullying charity StandUp in 2006 and has used his popularity with gay men to speak out about homophobia.

Speaking to PinkNews.co.uk on Saturday, he said his family’s experiences had spurred him to do something about the issue.

He said: “My dad was killed trying to protect someone being beaten up, bullied.”

When asked why he had become a gay rights campaigner, he said: “I’m not into gay rights. It’s about bullying, about people perceived to be different. We do take a specific look at LGBT – I have a big following, they’re very loyal.

“Rugby is very inclusive – all shapes and sizes make up a team. And your sexual orientation doesn’t matter, as Gareth Thomas shows.”

The player added that he had enjoyed his first Pride event, saying: “It’s been good, very enlightening. I’ve seen London in a different light.”
